Esaunggul.ac.id, The Faculty of Engineering of Universitas Esa Unggul (UEU) held a National Seminar with the theme The Engineering Profession and Professional Engineer Competencies which took place on Monday, 6 January 2024, at Building A, 8th Floor, Room 811, Universitas Esa Unggul, Jakarta. This seminar was open to all lecturers, employees, final year students, and engineering alumni.

Opening by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at UEU

The event began with an Opening Speech from the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Universitas Esa Unggul, Ir. Roesfiansjah Rasjidin, MT, Ph.D., who revealed that this seminar was part of the academic development efforts of the Faculty of Engineering of UEU vertically. According to him, this seminar is expected to provide a deeper insight into the engineering profession and the importance of professional competence for engineering graduates in Indonesia.

Keynote Speech from the Rector of UEU

The Rector of Universitas Esa Unggul, Dr Ir. Arief Kusuma Among Praja, ST, MBA, IPU, ASEAN Eng, delivered his speech as the keynote speaker. In his speech, he emphasised the importance of the engineer profession programme for industrial engineering graduates. He explained that the absorption of industrial engineering graduates as engineers in Indonesia is still relatively low. Therefore, this professional engineering programme is needed to improve the competence of industrial engineering graduates, provide professional expertise, and ensure they can carry out engineering duties legally and responsibly.

Seminar Organiser and Moderator

The national seminar was moderated by Dr Ir Pawenary, ST, MT, MPM, IPU, ASEAN Eng, ACPE, who is a lecturer and head of the founding team of PSPPI (Professional Engineer Study Program) at Universitas Esa Unggul. As the moderator, he facilitated the discussion with the speakers and ensured that the seminar ran smoothly and effectively.

Material Presentation by Leading Resource Persons

This national seminar presented two main speakers who are very competent in their fields. The first speaker, Prof. Dr. Ir. Joko Santoso, M.Sc., ASEAN Eng., who was the Director General of Higher Education for the period 2010-2014 and Chairman of BKTBE Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (PII) for the period 2022-present. Prof Joko discussed important issues related to the engineering profession and engineering education in Indonesia, as well as global challenges faced by engineers, such as energy fulfilment, Net Zero Emission, and the role of technology in achieving these goals.

In his presentation, Prof Joko emphasised three major issues: environmental sustainability, resource availability, and human well-being. He stated that the solution to these issues relies heavily on the application of appropriate technology as well as the active role of legally registered engineers in solving the grand challenges in Indonesia and the world.

Prof Joko also explained the importance of technologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) in reducing carbon emissions and supporting environmental sustainability. He mentioned that the high consumption of fossil energy in Indonesia can damage the environment, and more efficient energy management is needed to avoid further damage.

The second speaker, Ir. Faizal Safa, S.T., M.Sc., IPU, ASEAN Eng, ACPE, who is also the Chairman of BKTI Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (PII) for the 2021-2024 period, presented material with the theme Boosting Professional Engineers Productivity and Economic Growth to Exit Middle Income Trap. Faizal revealed that the key to boosting Indonesia’s economic growth is to increase the productivity of engineers. He explained that by increasing productivity, engineers can contribute to technology development that will help Indonesia escape the middle income trap.

This national seminar was also attended by various leading companies, such as Krakatau Steel, Seament Tekmindo, Petrokimia Gresik, and Pusdiklat Listrik Indonesia, who participated in discussions related to the development of engineer competencies. In addition, at this event a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between Esa Unggul University and a number of these companies, to strengthen collaboration in improving the quality of education and competence of engineers in Indonesia.
